Exhibition at Lauderdale House, December 1999

This painting was produced for an exhibition which I shared with three other artists in December 1999. The idea for the work was inspired by the impending Millennium which was being hyped by the media as a special occasion which would mark the end of an era and the beginning of a new one. The Dome was planned as part of the celebrations for and as a symbol of the new Millennium. There was considerable hype and publicity about the Dome which was seen by many as a waste of public money and a catalogue of mismanagement.  Seeing this saga unfold gave me an apt area for exploration to express my own ambivalent feelings towards the impending Millennium. 

My studio in Hackney was very near the site for the Dome and for several months before its completion, I photographed the development of the building and collected lots of material about the Dome. This included newspaper articles, publicity materials and educational information, much of which was used as collage in the work.;

Finally, I decided to create a large image of the Dome which was made up of 48 small paintings measuring 15" by 12", creating the large image which measured x10" by 6". All the individual paintings needed to work on their own as individual abstract pieces and the large painting was exhibited just once. I secured the smaller pieces of MDF onto a large piece of MDF. I used mixed media of acrylic, oil, collage and ink.
